How are your plans for downunder going?
I met Michael Kirton at CCL in Greensboro in 1981. I was about to start my dissertation research and considered using his KAI which he hadn't started requiring certification for then.
With his permission I used it with over 1200 students and professionals.
Eventually I decided to use the Herrmann Whole Brain instead of either the KAI or Torrance's SOLAT. In order to get permission to use the HBDI I did a correlation study with KAI and Torrance's SOLAT.
the correlation for the Upper right and lower left of HBDI and the Innovator-Adaptor or Left Brain - Right Brain variables of the other two were extremely high.
Unfortunately when I did test, retest with KAI and Torrance's SOLAT I found the scores to variable.
Also I eventually found many problems and inconsistencies within the KAI.
Symantic differentials seldom depict reality because their is too wide of interpretations of words and little to any equal comparison to the terms or questions.
To me the KAI sorts out rule followers and rule breakers.
Also I had the highest KAI Innovator score Michael had ever gotten.
He denied that it was a correct score until he had worked with me over the next year.
Since then I also did a study with 300 questionnaires and found the correlations to be extremely high.
From that I created my simple exercise that many people now have used as an indicator of their preferences.
It was never meant or claimed to be highly accurate.
Simply an indicator.

and others from the learning style field

I worked with his instrument just prior to doing my dissertation. Considered using it. After using it with over 1,000 subjects I chose not to. Instead I used the Herrmann Whole Brain Instrument over both the Kirton and Torrance's SOLAT, Gregorc's, Kolb's, Human Synergistics, MBTI and others.
From that came my simple survey form that gets people thinking and talking about "style" quickly.
