Creativity Champions

Dedicated to advancing creativity as a national and global value

Hi,

In "Explaining Creativity" researcher Keith Sawyer shows that creativity does not come from individuals, but it is collaboritive and a social process. After all, creativity is not a judgment we can make about ourselves. I see many postings here that seem to buy into the "great man" hypothesis, that creativity is something that somehow springs from within. Are there others that look at creativity as something from groups.

Yes, in fact I'm working on a column right now about "design thinking," which is inherently collaborative. And I'm thinking I may build on that to expand next month's column into "creativity as a group process." Care to discuss in greater detail?

The main theme of PICNIC’08 was Collaborative Creativity in its many guises. We looked at new and connected forms of intelligence and creativity, from the fields of entertainment, science, the arts and business. From the global brain to crowd-sourced design, from data visualization techniques to fostering creativity; from connected cities to connected souls: in a series of ground-breaking presentations, discussions and debates we will explore the future of collaborative creativity and its implications for us all.

It would be very interesting. I have been reading about "design science" and talking to a number of people that are interested in creativity and innovation in organizations. It seems to me that the idea of design is more engineering.

If anyone is in the SF Bay area, there is a meetup that explores creativity in groups: http://csr.meetup.com/57/

I'm working with a group of community colleges focused on a project to teach innovative thinking, and our position is that individuals can use discovery, imagination, curiousity, etc.. to bring forward great sparks of ideas and creativity, but it is in collaboration with others that the original idea or concept gets enhanced exponentially and likely that is what drives innovation forward.
